Further steps on the way toward enhancing Ecotourism in Fayoum
May 3, 2017
Since ecotourism is promoting “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education” (TIES, 2015), EU-JRDP aims to enhance this approach in Fayoum for improving rural livelihoods, by promoting income-generating activities and making best use of local resources. Fayoum potentialities have been identified through the EUJRDP Assessment report (Fayoum Ecotourism Assessment Report Extract).
To contribute to the achievement of the EU-JRDP expected result on enhancing ecotourism sector in Fayoum Governorate, the Programme launched during 2016 the 6th Call for Proposal for Eco-tourism in the Governorate of Fayoum , awarded in February 2017 by COSPE Egypt (Cooperazione per lo Sviluppo dei Paesi Emergenti) with a total funding of Euro 400,000 for the project “Ecotourism in Fayoum – Sharing Heritage, Communities and Resources.”
The overall objective of the action is to improve job opportunities and enhance local territory, culture and natural resources in Fayoum.
For supporting the smooth implementation of the activities, the EU-JRDP PMU and Fayoum sPMU are working in close and fruitful collaboration with the Fayoum Governorate and Tourism Directorate of Fayoum Governorate.
In parallel and in coordination with Grant awarded for ecotourism sector, the ecotourism strategy will stem from cooperation and dialogue between population, local players and external consultants, as per European LEADER approach. In particular, through the establishment of Local Action Group (LAG) in Fayoum, the coordination and synergy between the players of the economic and social bodies will be supported and marketing of local agricultural and non-agricultural products will be improved.
